First of all what is Viral Marketing, Viral Marketing is marketing that has a life of its own - multiplying it’s recipients as it spreads - rather like a virus actually. Viral marketing is a form of marketing where you get someone else to spread the word for you, just like a virus works.

There are several viral marketing techniques that can be applied for an advertising campaign to succeed. One of the factors that struck me very early is the fact that most of the successful people I spoke with use some form of viral marketing in their advertising and marketing plan.

In previous times effective ways of marketing a website virally was through the use of mediums such as the rebrandable ebook, writing articles and submitting them to e-zine directories and the free giveaways where you got commissions or incentives to send other users to the site.

These methods although still hugely successful are slowly being superceded with the introduction of web 2.0 and social sharing and distribution sites like U-tube and Facebook. Even the old format of contextual advertising is going viral but we shall go into more detail about that later in the article.

What online marketers hope to achieve with most viral marketing techniques is the old catch it, and then pass it on. If you offer high quality articles, white papers, reports, ecourses or ebooks, you can be sure that they will be passed around to others, and others will pass them on to others and so on and so forth thus producing a ‘viral’ effect.

The problem with these is most of them eventually lose steam or the market becomes so flooded with free ebooks and reports that they quickly lose their appeal. Many Web marketers are using games or short Flash movies to encourage people to visit their Web sites and tell all their friends to come, even this method is being over used and I see many complaints about videos being too commercial.

The whole point of viral marketing is to generate traffic and lots of it without having to pay the normal associated costs you’d have with other traffic generating techniques. The promotion must take on a life of its own and spread creating a buzz in the desired market.

I believe the right mix of creating buzz, having incentive and creating traffic virally has been found with the concept of contextual pop ads not like the normal annoying pop ads that float all around the place but ads similar to a Google type layout incased in a colorful border.

On the 21st of December this new concept was launched and has proved to be already immensely popular. The incentive is provided by the fact that for each person you introduce the level your ads are shown increases, as does the number of sites they are rotated on.
